Commissioned by National Gallery Singapore and Arts Fission (2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LW24 is a sculptural auditory display, playing a sonification of the future climate in South-East Asia. Weather forecasts 2015-2045 (courtesy of the Tropical Marine Sciences Institute, NUS) are time-compressed into 55 minutes and spatialised over 21 channels: the auditory display is a sonic map. Four movements are interspersed by a child\u2019s narration of how she imagines growing up in a world of climate change. This \u2018radio play\u2019 effect brings a human perspective onto the large temporal climactic developments being sonified, which are as hard to grasp as they are terrifying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When I was born, my father was thirty-five years old. Today, I\u2019m eleven\u2026The climate is described by the atmospheric pressure, temperature, wind strength, humidity, and precipitation – that is, rainfall. A day of rain corresponds to the sound of a plucked string. The third part starts the first of January twenty-thirty-five. When that day comes for real, I\u2019ll be thirty-one years old\u2026 There are more than twenty-two million values in the data, but the audification compresses time, so that four days pass by every second. The last part starts in January twenty-forty-five. By that date, I would be in my early forties\u2026 The last day in this sonification is New Years Eve of the year twenty-fifty-five. By then, I\u2019ll be even older than what my father is today – it\u2019s hard to imagine. I so wonder what the weather will be like then.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
