Svalbard Spaces

Svalbard Spaces is a piece for pianist, live electronics, and video. The composition brings together elements collected over time, all captured or generated by the composer. While the piano part was initially a self-contained piece, for Svalbard Spaces the pianist Prodromos Symeonidis provided a studio recording. In the final version the piano is live, triggering audio effects in Max such as granulation, delay, harmoniser, and pitch shifting, as well as prepared surround audio files. The latter are studio recordings by the composer playing pitched stone tablets, wood pieces, and aluminium pipes, constituting a sample bank. The video images, captured by the composer while travelling in Svalbard (Spitsbergen) in 2023, includes footage from Gipsvika, Magdalenefjorden, Ymerbukta, Dahlbreen, and ice caves near Longyearbyen.
