P8•八音

Series of works (2018–2021). Commissioned by Osage Gallery, New Music Ensemble, and ESKYIU, Hong Kong

In 2018, relocating to Korea and then Hong Kong, my practice evolved to directing music-driven films. With “Pieces of Eight”, I collaborated with Joyce Beetuan Koh on a score and placed musicians of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble at unusual outdoor settings: on a junk boat in Aberdeen Harbour, at a street market in Lo Wu, at the Wartime Stoves in Tai Tam Country Park, and more: places chosen for their significance for urban design in Hong Kong. The 50-minute score required each musician to listen carefully to the environment and, through their instrument, dialogue with various sound elements that appeared. The location audio recordings were post-produced for a hybrid multimedia performance and installation, presented at Taikoo Place in collaboration with ESKYIU design company.

When Osage commissioned me in 2021, I re-worked the recordings and layered them with new multimedia elements to create “P8•八音”. An eight-channel sound installation was diffused within a site-specific wall painting (a rendition of a map of Hong Kong) was overlaid with video projections. In addition to this central work, the exhibition featured four of my films: “Simmering,” “The Sound of Origin,” “KYAGER,” and “Making the Pieces of Eight.”

Through the process of creating these pieces and films, the boundaries between musician and soundscape momentarily dissolve, collapsing distance into experience itself.

• Lindborg PM & Koh JBT [SOUNDISLANDS]. Pieces of Eight – 八音 (performance). Nine-hour remote performances by eight musicians at eight locations with Internet streaming, followed by one-hour live performance with eight musicians, eight percussionists, eight eGuqins and eight-channel electronics at blackbox theatre.
